Soft lines

Why soft sower starts with seeing the friction

perspectives

The soft skills that were enough five years ago aren't enough anymore. And I don't mean languages, though fluency matters. I mean the ability to understand how two people—or two countries—actually think underneath the words they use.

We're in a moment where hard power is visible and contested. Military posturing, trade restrictions, sanctions. Everyone's watching. But the deals that still move, the relationships that still open doors… Those run on soft power. On trust. On the ability to connect across a divide that most people don't even know is there.

British and Latin American professionals understand this intuitively. They know they need to engage each other. They know the relationship matters. What they don't know—what most people don't know—is why their well-intentioned meetings keep stalling. Why the warm conversation doesn't turn into a next step. Why they walked away feeling understood and seen and then heard nothing.

It's not because anyone was dishonest. It's because they were speaking two different logics and calling them the same language.

The friction isn't linguistic. It's cultural.

In the UK, trust builds through demonstrated competence, track record, and measurable results. A British executive wants to know: can I rely on you? Will you deliver? The relationship is secondary to the performance.

In Latin America, trust builds through personal connection, empathy, and friendship. A Latin American executive wants to know: do I understand you? Do you understand me? Can I work with you as a person? The relationship is the contract.

These aren't personality types. They're how entire cultures learned to think, starting in childhood, reinforced through every institution and life experience. And when they meet in a conference room, neither person is wrong. They're both reading the room according to different rules; rules so deep they're invisible.

Until you know what to look for.

That's where intercultural intelligence actually lives.

Soft power isn't manipulation. It's not about getting people to do what you want against their judgment. It's the opposite. It's the ability to align your goals with theirs, to find the path where you both win and where you both understand what winning means to the other person.

That takes seeing the friction. Understanding the logic underneath the words. Knowing whether a ‘yes’ is a yes, or whether it's a ‘we're still thinking’. Knowing when a warm meeting means you've built trust, or whether it means you've only started the trust-building process. Knowing why your carefully prepared agenda just got derailed, and whether that's a disaster or the most productive thing that could have happened.

When you can see the friction, you can act in alignment with your own goals and with the people across from you. Aligned action builds trust. Trust builds influence. And influence is what gets you the result you came all the way to London—or Buenos Aires, or Bogotá—to achieve.

This matters more now, not less.

In a world of instant communication, AI-generated information, and unprecedented access to data, the thing that can't be commoditised is awareness. The ability to sit in a room and understand what's actually happening beneath the surface, to read the person across from you, to know the cultural logic shaping their decisions.

That skill used to be the domain of diplomats and long-career interpreters. People who'd spent decades in rooms learning by osmosis. But the timeline has compressed. The stakes have risen. And the people doing business across the British-LatAm divide can't afford to learn through trial and error anymore.

They need the systems. The frameworks that let them see what they've been missing. The language to name the friction they've felt but couldn't articulate. The tools to move from ‘I feel like something's off’ to ‘Here's exactly what's happening and here's what to do about it.’

That's what Slots v. Loops™ does. It makes visible what was invisible. It gives you the lever and the leverage.

And in a moment where soft power is becoming the defining asset, where relationships win over resources, where understanding wins over information, where reading the room wins over having the best pitch, that leverage is everything.
